Scilly Traditional Boat Weekend

Welcome to the Isles of Scilly traditional sailing weekend.

Our provisional programme of events offers something for all. Events are as follows...

Friday May 10th Arrive to the extravaganza of 100 traditional pilot gigs that will be on show in St. Mary’s after their annual world championships. A race of these beautiful handmade boats will take place on Friday evening at approximately 7.30pm followed by a traditional gathering at the Mermaid Inn to relax and unwind

Saturday May 11th (am) Saturday morning will be a chance to let harbour visitors get a glimpse of the many OGA boats in St. Mary’s Harbour. Islanders and visitors alike will relish the opportunity to discover more about these wonderful boats. There is also be the opportunity to join local tour guide and historian George Teideman for a run down on the history of the Islands.

Saturday May 11th (pm) Saturday afternoon will see the fantastic and much loved Redwing fleet take to the water for their weekly race out in St. Mary’s Roads. OGA vessels are most welcome to join in, or if you prefer you can spectate from the quayside, on board your own vessel or from the beach. Saturday evening is a chance to socialise once more in the stress-free atmosphere on Porthmellon Beach as Spero’s host a beach BBQ. Local ales from renowned local brewer Ales of Scilly will also be available! This will be a great evening.

Sunday May 12th (am) On Sunday morning there will be a chance to blow away any cobwebs with a trip aboard the harbour launch Pegasus. This craft may not be traditional but will allow you to experience the fast jet boat ride and relax on board as you are taken around St. Mary’s by harbour staff. (Bookings for this are essential and need to be made at the Harbour Office in advance)Once you have had chance to prepare your boats we are hopeful that you will all take part in a procession of sail {Tides and Winds permitting}as you depart St. Mary’s on Sunday afternoon. Many local and visiting sail boats will join you and this will no doubt be a fitting end to a visit which we hope you will never forget! (Full timings will be available from the harbour office)

A wide range of slideshows, events and shore side attractions will be open and available during the weekend, there will be a range of scheduled boating services on offer over the weekend offering scenic tours, wildlife and puffin-spotting trips and the opportunity to explore the off-islands too.
